Yacht Race/Rally
Indonesia is the largest nation of islands in the world. With no less than 17,000 islands, 80,000 kilometres of coastlines and 3.1 million square kilometres of sea, Indonesia is undoubtedly has the biggest potential for marine tourism in this planet. Not wanting to over emphasising the point, but Indonesia holds 15% of the world’s coral reefs that are blooming in blue waters waiting for discovery.
It is because of the above reasons there have been yacht races/rally organised by local enthusiasts between Darwin and Indonesian islands. The races/rally include:
The Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Darwin-Ambon yacht race is the largest yachting event held between Australia and Indonesia. This is an annual event commenced in the 80s and went on to become one the most anticipated event in the travel and tourism calendar for both the Northern Territory and Ambon. It has managed to attract hundred of participants from across the globe.
This race was unfortunately last held in 1998 due to the civil unrest and conflict that broke out in Ambon. However, in 2004, Darwin mayor Peter Adamson met with Ambon mayor, Marcus Papilaja, who wants to increase the city's involvement in Australian sporting events. Mr Adamson mentioned that the council would investigate ways of helping get the event started again.
The Consulate has been supportive of this event in providing participants with appropriate travel documents and information required to ensure the smooth running of this event.
Darwin to Bally Yacht Race
The Rally to Bali is also an annual event organised by private yacht clubs both in Darwin and Bali. This year, this event is scheduled for Saturday, July 23rd 2005. Information for this race can be obtained from www.darwinbalirace.com. The Consulate’s participation on this event is evidenced through visas issuance for the participants and attending the official launch of the rally.
Darwin to Kupang Yacht Race
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Darwin to Kupang Yacht Race normally starts in conjunction with the Darwin to Bali Yacht Race as it is organised by the same organization/s that run the Darwin to Bali Yacht Race. The information on this race can also be obtained from the above website.
Darwin to Saumlaki Yacht Rally
This yacht rally is the newest yachting event starting its maiden venture in 2004. This event has been the initiative of the Regent of Saumlaki who visited Darwin last year to discuss about possible collaboration with the City of Darwin.
Saumlaki is situated in the capital of the regency of West South-East Maluku. This fast becoming popular destination is well known for its marine products, especially seaweed, coral/reef garden and pearls.
